The aim of my work is to help you overcome obstacles that prevent you from reaching your potential and experiencing your life more fully. These may include relationship issues, depression or moodiness, trauma, addictions, excessive stress, eating disorders, anxiety, anger issues, self-harming or self-defeating behaviors, phobias, obsessive thoughts, grief/loss, problems with sexuality, career, or other life stressors. I have a collaborative style - your input is important in deciding how we can best work together.
I received my Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, was the Director of Outpatient Services at the Renfrew Center from 1994-2002 and an Assistant Professor at PCOM from 2002-2005 but left there to make more time for private practice and writing. I consider myself to be an integrative therapist, drawing from a number of approaches. I am certified in EMDR and also utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness based Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Existential-Humanistic Therapy, and Relational-Cultural Theory in my work. I regularly consult at the Center for Acceptance and Change as a way of staying immersed in a DBT perspective.
Please note, DBT groups and therapy from a purely DBT perspective are in the Bala Cynwyd office with Stephanie Mattei, Linda Filetti or Lina Lukens. In my Center City Philadelphia practice, we use an integrative approach, treating individuals, couples and families, from a wide variety of perspectives, including DBT. The city practice accepts most insurances, and we offer a sliding fee scale if you do not have insurance coverage.
